The Concerned Self - Prevention of Mental Disorders in the FRG and GDR 1949-2000
The subproject "The Concerned Self" of the DFG Research Group NORMAL#CRAZY is dedicated to prevention efforts in the field of mental health in both German states from their foundation until ten years after reunification.
The analysis focuses on the dispositive of the "concerned self" that emerged in the course of mental disorder prevention, which will be examined with regard to three central components:
State provision | (socio)pedagogical care | and psychological self-care.
The project thus brings two argumentative building blocks to the FOR:
- the changes of preventive practices and knowledge techniques by psychologists and social workers
- the entanglement of an anxious self through more personal responsibility and simultaneous disempowerment through precaution in the course of state discourses on prevention.
