Topics in the contemporary history of medicine

The central orientation of the research focus is to illuminate the relationship between medicine and society in the 20th century.

  • Health policy and health care in the Weimar Republic and under National Socialism, in the Western Zones/Federal Republic and in the Soviet Occupation Zone/German Democratic Republic (health care 20th century)
  • Development of science and higher education policy in the Weimar Republic, under National Socialism, in the four occupation zones as well as in the Federal Republic and the GDR (science and higher education)
  • Emergence and development of social hygiene/medicine and public health

Within the framework of the research, the literature databases "MedBeruf - Med. Ausbildung u. ärztl. Berufsfeld (1950-2005)" and "MedZeit - Zeitgeschichte d. Medizin im 20. Jh. (1945-2015)" were created and can be viewed online.

Among the topics of the contemporary history of medicine

Health care in the 20th century

The topic of health policy and health care in the 20th century is an under-researched field of investigation that suggests diachronic and comparative synchronic studies of developments in East and West Germany. In particular, it raises the question of guiding ideas and the structural developments in the political systems of postwar Germany. The (dis)continuities since the Weimar Republic and National Socialism play an essential role.
