Thomas Beddies has been working at the Institute since 2003; as deputy director, he is also primarily responsible for coordinating courses in the history and ethics of medicine in the Charité's model course of study in human medicine. For several years, he has also headed the project "GeDenkOrt.Charite", which is affiliated with the Charité Executive Board and deals with the history of the Charité, especially during the National Socialist era. In his research, Thomas Beddies deals, among other things, with the history of medicine in Berlin in the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of pediatrics and the history of psychiatry. Currently, under the title "Berlin auf Droge" (Berlin on Drugs), he is leading the DFG Research Group 3031 "NORMAL#VERRÜCKT. Zeitgeschichte einer erodierenden Differenz" (Contemporary History of an Eroding Difference), a project on heroin use in the Wall City between psychiatric reform and AIDS phobia in the 1970s and 1980s.

Vita Prof. Dr. Thomas Beddies
Thomas Beddies, born in 1958, studied history and political science at the Free University (FU) Berlin. From 1991 to 1993, he headed a project in Berlin to enforce reparation claims for victims of Nazi medicine. In 1993 he received his doctorate, and from 1993 to 1997 he was a research assistant at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the FU in the DFG project "Patient Descriptions of the Wittenau Sanatoriums from 1919 to 1960." From 1998 to 2001 he was a research associate at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald in the DFG project: „Die Soziale Integration psychisch Kranker als Ziel psychiatrischer Versorgung - historische Entwicklung seit 1900 in Deutschland“ ("The Social Integration of the Mentally Ill as a Goal of Psychiatric Care - Historical Development since 1900 in Germany") and subsequently until 2003 ibid. in the DFG project „Kinder als Opfer nationalsozialistischer Medizinverbrechen. Die Einbeziehung Minderjähriger in die Tötung behinderter und psychisch kranker Menschen 1939 bis 1945“ ("Children as Victims of National Socialist Medical Crimes. The Involvement of Minors in the Killing of Disabled and Mentally Ill People 1939 to 1945").
Since summer 2003, he has been working as an assistant or research associate at the Institute for the History of Medicine and Ethics in Medicine at Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin. In 2009 he habilitated in the history of medicine at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
