Institute for the History of Medicine and Ethics in Medicine at the Charité Berlin

The Institute for the History of Medicine and Ethics in Medicine focuses largely on topics of modern medical history. Source-related research into the history of Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and university history is one of the Institute's core competencies.

Currently ongoing research focuses, for example, on the history of reproductive medicine, drug research, the history of clinical research (East and West), and the health care system and its institutions. Long-standing research focuses on the history of psychiatry and contemporary history of medicine.

The Institute is involved in the teaching of human and dental medicine at the Charité.

The Library & Collection Medical Humanities has an extensive collection of medical historical and social medical literature and related sciences as well as historical sources, images and archival materials.

Medical History in Berlin

The Institute was founded in 1930 under the direction of the medical historian Paul Diepgen as a central state institute, making it one of the oldest institutions of its kind.  After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Institute at the Mitte Campus was merged with the Institute founded in 1963 at Freie Universität under the umbrella of the CharitèCenter for Human and Health Sciences, so that today's Institute combines two institutions rich in tradition.
